My first encounter with canola (rapeseed) was from the airplane, as we flew over the UK on our way to Edinburgh. I wondered, “What’s that yellow stuff?” Soon I learned it was canola, or what they call rapeseed in parts of the world that aren’t uptight about the word “rape.”

In April, the canola is flowering, so it appears as yellow.

  1. Yeah, the Canadian rapeseed oil marketing board, or whoever, has tried to make the word canola (CANada oil, what you get when you render Canada) stick, but it doesn’t seem to have made it over the atlantic. I now know to look for räpsolja when I want some.
