Poem: August 2015, Western USA

The forest

once ago had days of

dripping leaves,

shiny roots,

moist ground.

Then sparked the dry spell —

branches crackled with laughing tongues of flame.

Now the wind heckles us with

smoky memories

of the forest

that once was.
